Do I need protein shakes to build muscle?

By Mert Yerekapan · Updated

No, you don't need protein shakes. Muscle responds to your total protein for the day, not where it came from. A shake is just a convenient way to get some of it, and it counts the same as protein from chicken, eggs or beans.

If you can reach about 0.7 to 1 gram per pound of bodyweight (1.6 to 2.2 g/kg) from regular meals, you'll build muscle at the same rate as someone who adds shakes. See how much protein you need for the numbers.

When a shake makes sense

  • You keep falling short of your target by 20 to 30 grams
  • You're busy and need something quick after training
  • You don't have much appetite and drinking calories is easier than eating them
  • You're vegetarian or vegan and want an easy extra source

Whey, casein and plant powders (soy, pea blends) all work. Pick one you like the taste of and can digest comfortably, since a shake you hate won't get used.

Real food has an edge

Whole foods bring fiber, vitamins and minerals that powder doesn't. Eggs, yogurt, fish, lentils and meat also keep you full longer. I'd treat shakes as a backup, not the base of your diet.

Protein only pays off if you keep training. League of Fitness covers that side, since lifting sessions sync from Apple Health and a daily match keeps the sessions coming. It doesn't track food, so the protein math stays with you.

A few cautions

Supplements aren't tightly regulated, so look for products that are third-party tested. Some powders contain a lot of added sugar, and a few have been found with heavy metals, so don't use several scoops a day without thinking about it.

If you have kidney disease, a milk allergy or lactose intolerance, check with a doctor or dietitian first. Lactose-free or plant powders usually solve the digestion issue.

How I'd decide

Track your protein for three or four days. If you're already near your target, a shake adds nothing you need. If you're 30 grams short most days, one scoop closes the gap for a lot less effort than another chicken breast.
