How do I stop skipping workouts?

By Mert Yerekapan · Updated

Treat skipping as a planning problem and not a character flaw. Set fixed days and times, make the minimum session small enough that you can't talk yourself out of it, and cut every bit of friction between you and the first set. That fixes most cases.

Before changing anything, work out why you skip. The fix depends on the reason.

Find your pattern

Look at the last few skipped workouts and see which of these fits:

  • Too tired: the workout comes at the end of a draining day
  • Too big: the session is so long that it feels like a project
  • Too vague: no set time, so "later" never arrives
  • Too boring: you dread it
  • Too much at once: you went from nothing to six days and burned out

Fixes that match

  1. Too tired: move it earlier or make it shorter. See working out when you're tired after work.
  2. Too big: set a floor of 10 minutes. Showing up for 10 counts.
  3. Too vague: pick exact days and a time, and write them in your calendar.
  4. Too boring: change the activity, the music or the place. Making it more fun goes through options.
  5. Too much: cut your plan in half. Two or three days is a perfectly good starting point.

Remove friction

Pack your bag the night before. Park near the door or choose a gym on your commute. Lay out your clothes. The more steps between you and the workout, the more chances you have to bail.

Add a reason to show up

Plans that only involve you are the easiest to skip. A training partner, a prepaid class, a coach or a standing meetup with friends makes skipping cost something. Even telling one person your schedule helps.

League of Fitness is built around this. Every day you are matched 1v1 with someone near your level, you can chat with them, and the match is settled when the day ends, so skipping costs something. A short session still counts, which fits the 10 minute floor above.

Have a plan for the bad day

Decide in advance what you'll do when you really don't want to go. "I'll put my shoes on and walk for ten minutes" is enough. Most days, you'll keep going once you're moving.

Don't punish yourself

If you miss a session, skip the guilt and go to the next one. Missing a day rarely matters. Missing three weeks of days because you felt bad about the first one does.
